• Spring into Gusto

    Spring into Gusto

We have been grinding it out over the last couple of weeks and are down to the finals.  Our competitors have been through the highs and lows and 2 are left standing. Alejandro Alaniz and his Guadalajara Jack will be taking on Brooke Young’s  Chimichizza. Alejandro’s pie features a Salsa Verde,  Marinated Chicken, Jack, Cheddar and Manchego Cheeses with Tortilla Strips and Fresh Lime. Brooke’s creation is graced with Queso Blanco, Enchilada Style Chicken, Green Chiles, Onion, Tortilla Strips, Cilantro and Sour Cream.

But now it’s getting’ really realz because the only way you can vote now is at Gusto. That’s right, we will be running each pizza as this weekend’s special, starting at 5pm Thursday.  Cast a vote for your favorite by ordering a small. Cast two votes by ordering a large.  Voting will end Monday at 5pm and we will announce the winner at half time of the Championship Game.  The winner gets a pizza party and the glory of their divine creation gracing our menu.  Who will claim the crown in Road to the Best Gusto?

Spring is here and it’s time for Gusto to go on the road!  The “Gusto-Mobile” concessions trailer has been resting up all winter and is ready to spring back into action.  We have several events already lined up but are looking for your input on where we should go next.  Private parties, corporate functions, music festivals, anywhere that needs a little Gusto, we want to hear from you!  If you have any events planned this summer and would like Gusto to participate, please email us at info@gustopizzaco.com or call us at 515-244-8786!

Gusto is going golfing!  We are excited to announce the 1st annual Gusto Pizza Co. Charity Golf Classic!  This event will be held September 11th, 2012 at the Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk and all proceeds will benefit the Food Bank of Iowa.  We are currently looking for locally based corporate sponsors, hospitality partners and, of course, golfers!  More information on this great event will be released soon…

  • It is, as they say, ON!!!!!

It is, as they say, ON!!!!!

That's right! The Road to the Best Gusto is back for it's second year and we couldn't be more excited. Who else in Des Moines gives the power to the people? We asked for you to enter some of your favorite creative pizzas and we were not disappointed. With over 100 entries we were burdened with the task of narrowing it down to 32. After careful deliberation we got there and will be proud to have any of the final 32 grace our menu at Gusto Pizza Co.

We had a lot of new people make the tourney this year as well as a few returning competitors.  Last years winner was Chip Albright with the Championship Gyro. He has returned with the Korma Kameleon, ready to defend his throne. We even have some celebrities that have thrown their hats in the ring, but you don't have to be famous to win.

So start campaigning. Get your friends, family and co-workers to go to www.gustopizzaco.com to vote for you pizza. And maybe your pizza could be Des Moines, Iowa's next Divine Pie.

Easter Seals Iowa serves more than 2,700 children and adults with disabilities from all of Iowa’s 99 counties annually. Easter Seals Iowa is driven by its mission of “to provide exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or special needs and their families have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities,” and all of its programs and services have evolved out of this mission.

We provide 15 different program lines from camping to helping a farmer with a disability continue to farm. While each service line looks different- the one thing that you will find consistent is that Easter Seals is about supporting persons to live that life that they desire. The drawing will take place on Friday at 11am. Today we showcase Beacon of Life. If you would like to subit an entry for your organization, follow the guidelines here.

The Beacon of Life (A Residential Center for Women)

Since 1980, the Beacon has provided a haven from Des Moines streets for homeless women.  It is the only shelter in central Iowa that provides transitional housing with supportive services in a structured environment, exclusively for women who are homeless.  The Beacon Board of Directors incorporated in 1985.  In 1996, Beacon's leadership seized the opportunity to purchase a building in western downtown Des Moines on the corner of Woodland Avenue and 18th Street.  This permanent site has recently been expanded, renovated and transformed into a 34-bed wheel-chair accessible facility that provides services and transitional shelter for homeless women 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Because the Beacon is a smaller organization, we are always looking for willing and committed volunteers to help keep the programs we provide going.   A list of opportunities can be found here:  Beacon of Life Volunteer Opportunities.

We also accept donations for our daily needs.  Especially this time of year, adding any of the items from this page to your grocery list would go a long way at our facility.

To learn about our fundraisers (including the very popular Quiz Bowls), see photos, and get the most up-to-date information on the Beacon, please check out our Facebook and Twitter pages:

Central Iowa Shelter & Services: Serving the Homeless with Your Help Since 1992

Since 1992, the mission of Central Iowa Shelter & Services has been to provide free shelter and meals to homeless adults regardless of physical or emotional conditions, and to facilitate their move toward self-sufficiency.  The past 19 years of serving Iowa’s homeless has left CISS’ building worn out and with too few beds to meet the needs of Central Iowa’s growing homeless population, but that will soon change.  Construction is currently under way on a new 40,000 square foot opportunity center that will increase our capacity and provide additional needed services for homeless individuals.

As Thanksgiving and Christmas approach, CISS needs more help than ever from the Greater Des Moines community to aid Central Iowa’s homeless through the harsh Iowa winter. A full list of our most vital needs can be found on our website.  In addition to donations, a strong base of volunteers is vital to the success of Central Iowa Shelter & Services and to the success of its clients.  The Shelter needs groups and individuals to provide dinner and breakfast meals, and help with check-in and general office activities.

Our gratitude for the support of the Greater Des Moines community is immeasurable.  We rely on your generosity to serve each and every client who walks through the Shelter’s door, and our need is especially great during the winter months.  We wouldn’t be able to serve Central Iowa’s homeless without your help.

To learn more about our new facility, the needs of the shelter, how to donate, or to sign up as a volunteer, visit http://www.centraliowashelter.org  You can also like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to spread the word on how you and others can help.

  • Gusto Pizza Featured In A Story on WOI-ABC5 TV!

    By Katie Eastman

    keastman@myabc5.com

In a recent interview with the LA Times, the social media director for the job site monster.com said their social media job listings have jumped 75 percent. Businesses all over Des Moines use social media. But you might not realize that for the people running those accounts, it's a full time job.

"I help them create raving fans through social media," said Phil James.

He's the face behind Gusto Pizza's twitter and facebook page.

"I let people know what the personality of the restaurant is rather than sounding like a robot spewing off commercials," James explains.

That means, he gets to have a lot of fun. In some of his recent tweets he talks to customers about college football and music.

"You have to have a conversation with somebody before you can earn their trust," he says.

But make no mistake. His position is a serious job.

"I think social media has passed the test  of it's not a fad, it's not going away," said Claire Celsi, President of the Des Moines Social Media Club.

She monitors local job sites and she's noticed a big change over the past year.

"Three years ago I was looking for a social media job and there was no such thing," she laughs.

But now, people like Phil James are in high demand.

"You go where people are," James said. "And that's the thing to take away. People are using this stuff on a daily basis, more now than they were even six months ago and it's not going away."

  • Hoyt Sherman Place: Gusto Social Share Monday

Once per week on Mondays, Gusto Pizza Co. allows a member of the non-profit community in Greater Des Moines to write about their organization.  We'll post that on our blog on Monday morning, then broadcast that info on our social media sites and give away a $10 gift card per week for anyone who re-tweets the message or shares the link on their facebook wall. The drawing will take place on Friday at 11am. Today we showcase Hoyt Sherman Place. If you would like to subit an entry for your organization, follow the guidelines here.

Hoyt Sherman Place, a stunning 19th Century grand manor home, remains a centerpiece of Des Moines’ Sherman Hill Historic District and a hub for cultural entertainment.  Its 1,250-seat theater, the only mid-sized historic theater in central Iowa, hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from musicians and comedians to speakers and theatrical performances.

To many singer songwriters, the Hoyt Sherman Place Theater has become known as “The Listening Room” because of its outstanding acoustics.  The historic mansion and art galleries serve as entertainment spaces for hundreds of groups and gatherings annually, hosting wedding receptions, corporate dinners, meetings, lectures and more.  Approximately 75,000 people attended an event at Hoyt Sherman Place last year.

Hoyt Sherman Place remains a precious architectural and cultural gem in Des Moines’ crown, and needs your help to remain a shining star.

While the event rental business provides a revenue base, the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation must rely on the generosity of private, corporate and foundation donors.   Generous gifts allow Hoyt Sherman Place to continue serving our community.

Funding will be used for ongoing maintenance , operating expenses, and the preservation of our extensive art and artifacts collection containing hundreds of Victorian era antiques.

Your generous gift will assist the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation in maintaining the mansion, theater and art gallery for generations to come.
